The medical innovation of the iron lung is a bit before my time. Judging by the pictures, I am so grateful for modernized technology. Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs’ self-titled album, encapsulates the sublime elements associated with iron lungs. They have a big sound and Sam’s vocal presence seems super charged by a steam pumped lung!

Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs have a very nostalgic punk sound reminiscent of predecessors like The Clash sprinkled with Lou Reed. Simple chording combined with abrasive vocals and clunky drumbeats show a true mastery of the spirit of punk music: simple and raw.

The most refreshing aspect of the album is the successful integration of a country-folk-punk genre. Yeah I know, your mind was just blown…and yes it does exist. Give the track Bright Lights a listen and you will see how it just works. It kind of sounds like a Bob Dylan sing-a-long (think Cocaine Blues or Rainy Day Woman).

Songs like Lil’ Asia, Sick of Love,  and Have a 100 are sure to rock your socks as you yell along at the top of your lungs, whether they are made of iron or soft pinkish muscle tissue.
